Renowned artist Michael Dumas “Of Light and Life” exhibit coming to Agnes Jamieson Gallery

A new exhibit by renowned artist, Michael Dumas titled “Of Light and Life”, will be opening at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery on July 17.

Officials with the Township of Minden Hills say the exhibit will be on display at the local gallery from July 17 to September 13, with the opening reception happening on July 19 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

“While the natural world has exerted its influence on my artwork since childhood, the essential foundation for my work is direct observation of the world around me. It is born of a need to connect, to understand,” said Michael Dumas, in a municipal press release. “My exhibit, featuring several new pieces, provides a glimpse into the processes involved, from observational sketches and comprehensive preliminary drawings that may or may not lead anywhere beyond the motivating interest that inspired them. Overlaying this procedure is the matter of materials, the choice of medium, the support it will be applied to, and a sense of just what combinations are most sympathetic to the envisioned image.”

Dumas was born and raised in the town of Whitney, near Algonquin Park. He previously worked as a park ranger and continued his connection to the park by going along with research teams on projects.

Dumas’s subject matters include rural themes and people with his art showcasing an intimate connection through personal experience. His exposure and familiarity with the wilderness and its creatures are noticed in his work.

According to officials, Dumas’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and his art has been featured on Canadian postage stamps and commemorative coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint.
