School Board Director of Education talks about sex-ed changes

Students in our local schools will see a new sex-ed program in September. Director of Education with the Trillium Lakelands District School Board, Larry Hope explains the decision to include technology as a big part of the curriculum.

Hope says the changing technology will be an ongoing challenge, but the school board keeps their teachers up to date with training. In this respect, he explains why the changes are important.

Hope says the school board hasn’t received any direct comments about the changes, but have heard that some parents are concerned that starting the curriculum in grade one is too young. Hope explains what went in to making the decision

Hope says a few school council representatives across the district participated in a survey that was a part of the consultation. He says based what they’ve heard so far, parents will have the option to opt-out of their child taking part in the new curriculum.
