Dorset Snowball Winter Carnival seeking volunteers

The Dorset Snowball Winter Carnival is calling on the community for additional volunteers as it prepares for a weekend of winter festivities.

The annual carnival will take place on February 13 and 14 at multiple indoor and outdoor venues throughout Dorset, including the Dorset Ice Palace, Dorset Recreation Centre, and Centennial Lions Park.

According to officials, the event is entirely run and organized by volunteers, and it would not be possible without their support. The carnival also relies on local sponsors and donations from the community.

A wide range of volunteer opportunities are available, including event setup and teardown, assisting at activity stations, supporting food and beverage services, managing interactive attractions, and providing general guest assistance and information throughout the weekend.

The Dorset Snowball will offer an abundance of family-oriented activities, attractions, and entertainment.

The festivities begin on February 13 at the Dorset Ice Palace with a skating party, featuring music, a campfire, and hot chocolate.

February 14 will feature a pancake breakfast, the Snowball parade, a hockey shoot-out, inflatable axe throwing, a cardboard toboggan race, a dunk tank, balloon art, maple taffy, face painting, and a children’s colouring contest. Other attractions include food vendor booths, a bake sale, a photo display, a bird of prey show, the Great Canadian Lumberjack Show, a virtual reality dog sled tour, a silent auction, and horse-drawn wagon rides to and from the Dorset Heritage Museum.

The weekend wraps up with Hockey Night in Dorset at the Dorset Ice Palace, where Dorset and Lake of Bays will compete for the Dorset Cup.

First launched in 1991 by the volunteer committee for the Dorset Recreation Centre, the Dorset Snowball Winter Carnival was created as a community event and fundraiser for the facility. Since then, organizers said it has grown significantly, drawing more than 1,000 attendees from across Ontario each year.
