The Haliburton Highlands Land Trust recently acquired a 200-acre property north of Minden off Plantation Road.
Officials say, they are looking to give the nature reserve a name and they want your help.
On July 1, the organization launched a naming contest. Residents are invited to submit up to three names for consideration. The winner and runners up will be selected by a panel of Land Trust members and friends from the community. The deadline for submissions is July 25.
According to the Land Trust, the reserve is flush with 15 unique ecosystems ranging from deciduous forests, meadows, swamps, fens, marshes and red pine plantations. It is also a wildlife sanctuary, as blandings turtles, beavers, fox, mink, frogs, rare plants and countless birds all call the acreage home. Officials with the Land Trust said the property is “a hiker’s dream” and that they are busy preparing a public trail system on the property.
“Flat meadow and plantation on the north end of the reserve provide easy walking, while a planned boardwalk will offer iconic views of the expansive wetland. To the south, the terrain gets more vertical with forested hills and cliffs to provide a fresh challenge,” states a post about the property.
