NewsTurtle project showing early success SHARE ON: Smith Autumn, contributor, Thursday, May. 14th, 2015It’s early in the season, but the Haliburton Highlands Land Trust is already reporting success with their turtle project. Last year, a team of volunteers put up a barrier fence on each side of a section on Gelert Road to prevent turtles from crossing the road by directing them under it through a culvert. This year’s phase started around the end of April, and monitors are seeing that all types of turtles are safely getting from one side of the road to the other using the culvert. With five of the six turtle species in Haliburton County at risk, the project is showing promise to help preserve the population.
