This weekend’s Walk for Alzheimer’s in Haliburton about community support and fundraising

Haliburton County will see its first ever Walk for Alzheimer’s this weekend. Suzi Dunkley is the Fund Development Coordinator for our local Alzheimer’s Society and she explains what it is they do:

The Walk is a fundraiser for the services the society offers, and 100 per cent of the funds raised here will stay in the community.

Dunkley says community support is so important in a family’s journey with dementia. She explains her experience:

One in six women over the age of 65 in Canada has dementia, and the estimate is that 24 million people will be diagnosed in the next 25 years. With this many people affected, Dunkley says one of the most important things to do is break down the stigma.

The Walk for Alzheimer’s is taking place in Head Lake Park at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (May 31). You can pick up a pledge form at a few different locations around Haliburton and Minden including the Moose FM studio, both Foodland locations, Minden Home Hardware, and Source for Sports.
