New legislation adds bans to smoking, benefits youth says local tobacco control officer

The province of Ontario recently passed a new legislation called the Making Healthier Choices Act. Some of the changes include banning the sale of e-cigarettes where the sale of tobacco is prohibited. It’s also introducing the ban of using e-cigarettes in any areas that are designated as non-smoking. Lorne Jordan, Tobacco Control Officer with our local health unit explains why these are a huge step forward:

The Act will also ban the sale of flavoured tobacco products, which Jordan says will have a huge impact.

Jordan says that in 2002, 30 per cent of students were daily smokers, and now it’s down to 14 per cent. He says we’re better than we’ve ever been, but there are still ways we can do better.

Jordan says the legislation is a responsible move, and one they’ve been waiting on for a few years.
