Minden council votes no to generator station

Minden Hills council has voted against a new generator station at the White Water Preserve.

In yesterday’s meeting, councillors said they’re not against alternative energy projects, but this one isn’t the right fit for the township.

The proposal came from Orillia Power Generation, who only had until Sept. 1 to submit the application to the province’s green energy program.

Councillors have not been happy with the tight deadline, saying it’s unfair of the province to ask for support before their questions can be answered.

Residents are concerned over possible damage to the preserve. Councillors agreed, saying it’s a big asset to the community they don’t want to ruin.

Councillor Lisa Schell says she’s had more people call about this issue than any other topic in her nine years at the township.

Reeve Brent Devolin says this isn’t no forever, but conversations need to continue to come up with other options.

The vote against the project was unanimous.
