Local health unit doesn’t see funding increase

The HKPR District Health Unit is under a cash crunch.

A new funding model announced by the province in September means a zero per cent increase to their operating budget.

Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mary Catherine Masiangelo says a zero per cent increase is like a cut in funding when you consider rising costs.

The Board of Health is endorsing a resolution calling on the Ontario government to reconsider the model. They aren’t expecting an increase in funding any time soon, so they are looking at ways they can be more cost effective.

Masciangelo says they’re not looking at reducing services, but how to deliver them in a more cost efficient way.

However, if the zero per cent increase continues, Masciangelo says they’ll have to look at a multi-year plan.
