Algonquin Highlands close to agreement with company to provde high speed internet to residents around Dorset and Lake of Bays

High speed internet could be available to Dorset and area residents in the near future.

Xplornet Communications Inc. and the Township of Algonquin Highlands are close to finalizing a 10-year deal worth $6,000 a year.

The agreement is to lease space on the Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower.

Mayor Carol Moffatt says a few questions still need to be answered.

According to a coverage map shown to council today, many residents in the Lake of Bays Township would have access to high speed internet.

Moffatt adds she is happy to support an initiative that benefits both townships.

Xplornet hopes to have the infrastructure on the tower in place by March 31st.

According to a report shown at a council meeting in January, the service would be available to approximately 850 residents in Algonquin Highlands and Lake of Bays.
