Haliburton County Council is looking for the province to consider them next time cannabis licences go out.
When it was announced that there was a minimum population required to be included in the Cannabis licence lottery, Haliburton County and it’s municipalities were cut from consideration.
With that in mind, Haliburton County is creating a letter, going to the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP Laurie Scott, asking for the province to consider Haliburton County when the next group of licences are being given out. Dysart et al Mayor Andrea Roberts urged her fellow councillors to create a collective voice urging consideration, an idea that was well received.
In an interview with My Haliburton Now.com Algonquin Highlands Mayor, Carol Moffatt suggested that rural Ontario communities once again got the shaft. Moffatt said the province has been playing “who’s got the button” a sentiment that she restated at the county level earlier today.
According to Charlsey White, the Director of Planning for Haliburton County, now the county has been excluded there has been no word from the province on what that means for the funding being given to communities who opted in.
Although the county and its representatives agreed to send a letter to Scott, they are waiting until after the next Rural Ontario Municipal Association meeting. Minden Hills Mayor, Brent Devolin says the ROMA meeting should give them collectively a better idea of what happens next.
