City of Kawartha Lakes officials are reeling from a fine given to the municipality by the feds.
The corporationĀ of the City of Kawartha Lakes is facing a $75,000 fine stemming from work done in August 2014. Canadian Newswire says Kawartha Lakes has entered an agreement with the Public ProsecutionĀ Service of Canada. This agreement means that aside from the fine, Kawartha Lakes has to update its standard operating procedure and publish the incident to its website.
According to Newswire, in 2014, the city contracted work on the Washington drain and that work resultedĀ in sediment being released into a “fish-bearing” waterway. Environment and Climate Change Canada investigated the incident and found the concentrations of sediment were harmful to the fish in that waterway.
The investigation also found that the work was started without taking proper steps to “mitigate the release of sediment into the waterway.”
All charges against the city will be withdrawn once all of the requirements are met.
