Fatal collisions at a nine-year low

Haliburton County roads are seeing fewer fatalities than years past.

Back in February the O.P.P. released a statement saying there had been a reduction in fatalities on Ontario roads. The same is being said about the roads around the county.

MyHaliburtonNow.com contacted the Highlands O.P.P. and Constable Amanda Gilbert provided a report that shows traffic fatalities in 2019 as zero. Which is lower than the 2018 total of one.

With no traffic deaths so far this year, that marks the lowest total since 2011. On the other hand, the highest amount of deaths was 2016, when seven people lost their lives.

Across Ontario, the O.P.P. say that 2018 saw a reduction in lost lives. Last year, 296 fatal collisions resulted in 333 lost lives compared to 343 deaths in 2017.

Although the number of deaths has gone down, the number of charges laid went up from 2017 to 2018. In total there were 381,714 traffic-related charges.
