Local MP says negotiations are still ongoing about what the recall of Parliament will look like

Local MP Jamie Schmale says “negotiations are still ongoing as to what the recall of parliament will look like”.

Parliament resumed Monday, as part of the agreement that was made between all parties prior to March break, and the world shutting down.

The house resumed Monday morning as part of the agreement as to how they move forward.

He says “visual parliament is being talked about, but the Procedure of House Affairs committee, the committee that governs and looks after how parliament works, has not come up with a witness list yet, to study the issues”. Schmale says “this is weeks and weeks out. There are a lot of other procedural questions that need to be answered before they’re ready for that”.

He also says that Canada is a large country and there are a” lot of areas with pretty horrible internet and cellular service”, including right here in Haliburton County.

He says this isn’t an easy fix and says right now they are “printing a lot of money, they are pushing out programs, that are being put together very quickly, and there needs to be some questions about that, there are many businesses and individuals that are falling through the cracks”.

MP Schmale says “that’s why parliament needs to be there, to ask these questions of the government and offer suggestions”.

He said this shouldn’t be “overly partisan, that this should be constructive”, because there are people being left out, voices that need to be heard, and that only then can they tweak these programs to catch as many individuals as possible.
