Local paramedic earns Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery

A local paramedic is receiving a provincial honour medal for her actions.

Officials say in October of 2021, off-duty Advanced Care Paramedic Beatrice Frasca, with the Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service, was enjoying a hike with friends at Bruce Peninsula National Park when she noticed a group of men preparing to cliff jump from a grotto into the water below.

Frasca shouted at the men, warning them of the strong and cold water currents.

Despite the warning, the men jumped. Two emerged from the water, but one was unresponsive. Officials say Frasca risked her own safety, when she and a friend climbed down the cliff to rescue the unconscious man, dragging him back to shore and administering care. They add despite their best efforts, the man did not survive, but they were able to assist the two other men who were suffering from cold exposure.

This is the first year the province has awarded the Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery to paramedics who performed individual acts of outstanding bravery and exceptional courage in the face of danger.
