MH hoping to slow boaters down on Gull River

A few Minden Hills councilors are concerned about the speed limit on the Gull River. At yesterday’s council meeting, Darren Levstek gave an update to council about the long process with Transport Canada to change the limit.

Levstek said concerns from councilors Brigitte Gall and Ken Redpath came to him when he began working as Interim Director of Community Services, and he’s been working on it ever since. He told council he collected information and data, and held numerous meetings with residents, lake and property owners associations, as well as the OPP and City of Kawartha Lakes.

Levstek said they’ve had problems with the river for a number of years, with boats at high speeds causing erosion of the shoreline and causing safety concerns. Direction from Transport Canada was to put the application in as soon as possible, but there was no guarantee of approval.

Minden Hills council voted on the issue at the July 24 meeting and unanimously agreed to have Levstek submit the application. If approved, the limit would change to 10 km/h.
