OHTO’s Wander Sustainably program promotes responsible tourism

Some tourism operators in our region are embracing a new approach to doing business, with hopes it will lead to more long-term growth. It’s called “Wander Sustainably” and it’s being championed by the Ontario Highlands Tourism Organization (OHTO).

Director of Industry Development Kasey Rogerson says at the OHTO’s October 17 Annual General Meeting, some businesses that have embraced Wander Sustainably will talk about how the approach has guided their work.

She says the approach is about following three guidelines: building inclusivity, working on community alignment and ensuring work is environmentally sustainable

The approach is about getting groups to work together to promote each other, hiring local people and preserving the environment so tourism will continue to be lucrative for years to come.

“We try to have our partners collaborate, find new ways to attract visitors out to the region,” she says.

Rogerson says Wander Sustainably is ultimately about practicing responsible tourism.
