Spring fly-in on Saturday at Stanhope Airport

There will be plenty of planes and other vehicles at the Stanhope Airport this weekend to kick off the spring.

The Stanhope & Community Fly-In to Spring runs 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Algonquin Highlands Mayor Liz Danielsen says she can’t go into specifics, but there’ll be a wide selection of things to see.

“We’ve got a number of classic planes, there’s lots of ultralights flying in, and we will have some model airplanes for kids to look at,” says Danielsen. “There’s lots of great food, township and fire department equipment, the MNRF will be there. So we’re hoping there’s something for everybody in the family.”

Fly-ins to kick off the summer and fall are also planned, and Danielsen says to expect more events at the airport in the future, potentially including a dedicated demonstration of model airplanes.

“We hope to have a little bit of a different theme for each fly-in—something more geared towards kids one time,” says Danielsen. “We will in the fall have another classic and antique car event, which was really very popular. So we’re hoping to have at least three major fly-ins every year and maybe some smaller events throughout the year.”

Admission to the event is free, while aircraft flyovers of the Haliburton Highlands will be available for a fee.

“We’re expecting lots of pilots to fly in from other communities in the area, so we’re really hoping for sunshine,” adds Danielsen. “We just hope that we have a good day, and that everybody comes out and has a great time.”
