The County of Haliburton will be submitting an application to the province in hopes of recouping some of the money spent due to April’s ice storm.
During a meeting on Aug. 27, County CAO Gary Dyke spoke about the storm, in which 35 to 40 mm of freezing rain hit Minden Hills and portions of Highlands East over two days.
“It ended up being the third largest ice storm event in Ontario history. It was quite significant in the sense that we had greater than 20,000 residences without power for anywhere from three to 14 days,” said Dyke, who also noted that there were several days without both cellular service and internet coverage.
During the immediate emergency response and month-long cleanup the County spent around $354,000, according to Dyke. He says they are eligible to receive a reimbursement of up to $193,000 through the province’s municipal ice storm assistance program.
The County also received a $10,000 grant from Hydro One to help cover costs.
The remaining unbudgeted costs, around $150,000, will be discussed at a later date.
