County of Haliburton seeking additional ice storm assistance funding

County of Haliburton officials say they’ve been short changed by the province’s municipal ice storm assistance funding program.
According to staff, the County incurred nearly $340,000 in unbudgeted costs related to last year’s ice storm and submitted a request for $245,000 to the provincial assistance program.
Staff said the province initially approved assistance of $184,000 in December. However, the two payments they’ve received total to $110,000, more than $73,000 short of the approved amount.
According to staff, the province excluded the approximately $100,000 in costs associated with the Deep Bay Road culvert washout, determining that this was caused by heavy rainfall, and not as a direct result of the ice storm.
Staff said they disagree with the province’s take, and are working to collect the outstanding balance.
