HKPR health unit on enhanced surveillance during cyclospora outbreak

A national investigation into the outbreak of Cyclospora has put our local health unit on enhanced surveillance.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says the parasite is passed in people’s feces. If it comes into contact with food or water, it can infect people who eat or drink it. In the past, the outbreaks have been linked to imported fresh produce. The source of this outbreak isn’t confirmed yet.

Manager of Communications with the HKPR health unit, Chandra Tremblay says they haven’t seen an increase in the number of cases in our area. Typically, they investigate one to two cases of Cyclospora every year.
