Algonquin Highlands approves a PTSD plan for firefighters

Algonquin Highlands is moving forward a plan to help firefighters dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. Council approved the strategy at a meeting earlier this month, which outlines prevention intervention, recovery, and return to work policies.

Under the plan, managers and supervisors will take training courses on recognizing the signs and symptoms, implement a process to report concerns, and help to identify methods to prevent PTSD.

The plan also outlines training courses for employees, and how concerns can be reported. The township is also going to look at how the program is working at different points throughout the year.

This comes after the Ministry of Labour mandated all municipalities with first responders put a plan in place.
