You can take steps to prevent theft at your cottage during the off-season

You may be getting ready to close up your cottage for the winter, and police want you to keep crime prevention top of mind.

Haliburton Highlands O.P.P. says thieves are most likely to target cottages and seasonal homes between Thanksgiving and Victoria Day, so it’s important to have deterrents in place. Community safety Officer Dianna Dauphinee says you can prevent theft at your cottage by making sure it’s visible.

Dauphinee says it’s also important to protect things you have to leave at the cottage from theft.

Police recommend also giving a permanent resident your contact information, and asking them to check on your property. Don’t leave firearms, weapons, food, or alcohol at the cottage, and remember to lock it or lose it.
