Minden Hills Wants to Know Your Thoughts on Short Term Rentals

The Township of Minden Hills is looking into short-term rentals, and they want your feedback.

With the increasing popularity of services like Airbnb, municipalities are looking into how they can regulate short-term rentals. Minden Hills is hoping to gather the feedback and thoughts of their residents with a survey, in hopes of avoiding conflict amongst renters and property owners.

The survey is supposed to take five to 10 minutes to complete and asks what your connection to the short-term rental conversation is, have you ever experienced or seen unwanted behaviours stemming from a short-term rental, and if you find that there are positives to allowing short-term rentals.

Minden Hills officials say that they are doing this survey because of the surge in popularity of short-term rentals. According to a study done by the neighbouring District of Muskoka, almost eight per cent of property owners with a second home will rent out the second home for an average of six and a half weeks per year. As it sits now, the town’s zoning by-law doesn’t allow this kind of land use. As well the town wants to make sure that septic systems are being used for their designed capacity.

The survey can be found on the Minden Hills’ website.
