Algonquin Highlands council named to Chatelaine’s Women of the Year list

Algonquin Highlands’ all-female council is getting even more national attention for electing women to all council positions.

Several months removed from the 2018 municipal election, the Township of Algonquin Highlands is getting some national exposure after being included in Chatelaine Magazine’s Women of the Year list.

With the appointment of an all-women council, the northernmost municipality in Haliburton County has garnered the attention of not just the renowned magazine but also the Prime Minister, at a regular meeting of council, Justin Trudeau called in to congratulate the municipal politicians for accomplishing the feat.

Algonquin Highlands councillors were joined by the councillors of Spanish Ontario, who are also all women, on the Chatelaine list that included the likes of Olympian Tessa Virtue, CBC’s President and CEO Catherine Tait, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland.

Chatelaine noted in the list that The CAO and Treasurer in Algonquin Highlands are both female as well and that the Haliburton Highlands O.P.P. Detachment Commander is a woman also.
