Algonquin Highlands Landfills in good shape

All of the landfills in Algonquin Highlands are doing well according to the latest reports.

Adam Thorn, the Operations Manager, met with council earlier today to go over the findings of Cambium Incorporated’s findings at each of the landfills.

Thorn says each report had suggestions despite the sites being in good standing. At the Oxtongue and Dorset sites, Cambium says they can cut back the quarterly site monitoring. The reports were received as information only.

At the Maple Lake site, Cambium made the recommendation to continue ground and surface water monitoring. Thorn, giving his thoughts with the report, suggested the council don’t do anything different this year because everything is in compliance.

According to Thorn, just like the landfills, the septage lagoon is in good shape based on Cambium’s findings. Cambium did, however, suggest that monitoring should continue. As well the report suggested investigating a site further downstream between sampling stations MCSW1 and MCSW4. It is also suggested the town look into moving the MCSW1 station to determine if the lagoon is influencing water quality at the MCSW4 site.

Cambium also recommended that the township invests in fencing to go around the lagoon to limit human interaction with the wetland.

After hearing the status of the lagoon, Councillor Jennifer Dailloux pointed out that there is a lot of misconceptions about the lagoon and how it is having adverse effects on the area, and it’s nice to know that is not the case.
