Needle disposal bins recommended for public washrooms

HALIBURTON, ON-More needle disposal bins have been recommended by Dysart et al’s council to reduce the amount of needles on the ground.

According to the Haliburton Echo, one needle disposal box was installed in Head Lake Park last year and the bins maximum capacity of 6,000 needles had been emptied once or twice.

Angela Andrews, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit Health Promoter said, according to the Haliburton Echo, that it is great that the bins are being used, just not overly and that the bins would be a great thing to have.

The paper reported that the main focus behind the bins was to eliminate litter and reduce the possibility of locals finding and hurting themselves on the needles.

Andrews suggested adding a wall-mounted needle disposal bin in library, park and arena washrooms. Each bin would cost around $100.

She also suggested that “found needle kits” be installed so that if any person were to come across one, they would be able to dispose of it properly.

According to the Echo, Mayor Andrea Roberts said at the October 22nd meeting, that a decision would not be made that day, but will be considered during budget time.
