OPP with a few tips on making Halloween safe for everyone

Central Region OPP want to make sure that this Halloween is safe for you and your loved ones.  Here are a few tips for parents and guardians.

OPP is  recommending that you avoid dark coloured costumes if possible.  If that isn’t possible add some reflective tape to both the front and back of the costume.

They also recommend that you start your trick or treating early before it gets too dark.

Use face paint rather than masks.  Masks can make it difficult for your children to see.

Costumes should fit properly to prevent trips and falls.

Young children should be accompanied by an adult and make sure that you tell them not to eat anything until they get home and the candy is inspected.

OPP are advising that  children dress according to weather conditions and to follow a pre planned route with a curfew.

Be sure to only go to homes that are well lit.  Never enter a stranger’s car or home.

Use the sidewalk when one is available and if there is no sidewalk, walk on the side of the road facing traffic.  Be sure to stop, look and listen before crossing the road.

OPP are recommending that if you have a cell phone be sure to bring it with you and  be sure it is fully charged.

Never go  trick or treating alone.

For the homeowners OPP recommend that you replace burnt out bulbs and remove any items from the front of your home that may trip the little ones.

Use alternatives to candles in pumpkins such as a flashlight or battery operated candle.

For drivers OPP is  advising drivers to drive slowly in residential neighbourhoods and watch out for children who will be wearing costumes with masks that make it difficult for them to see.

Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully and  never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

OPP want to make sure that your Halloween is a safe one.

Happy Trick or Treating everyone!
