Moose FM Christmas Radiothon supporting food banks Thursday and Friday

Haliburton’s 93.5 Moose FM will hit the air for the 17th year in a row in support of our region’s food banks.

From 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both Dec. 7 and Dec. 8, our Christmas Radiothon will raise money for the Haliburton 4Cs Food Bank, with donations split proportionately between Minden, Haliburton, Cardiff, and Wilberforce.

Jean Munroe, Manager of the Minden Community Food Centre, says the need has skyrocketed since last year, with a 45 per cent bump in individuals and a 55 per cent in families needing to use the centre.

“The need this year is extremely high,” says Munroe. “We’re seeing families having two working parents and they’re unable to keep up with the food costs right now. We’re seeing a lot of seniors as well that are coming in more.”

According to Munroe, there’s also been an increase in how often clients have needed to use food bank services.

“We’re seeing now a lot of people coming back before they’re supposed to be due the following month, says Munroe. “We provide them with a month’s worth of additional food, and it’s not to cover them for the entire month, this is just to supplement them. But they’re coming back because they’re running out of food and they can’t afford to buy any on their own. So that’s a huge difference from last year and the year before.”

To donate to the radiothon, call 705-457-3897 on Thursday or Friday.
