Roads in Haliburton County are about to get a lot safer, and more expensive for some. Starting today, the fine for distracted driving is a minimum of $490 and three demerit points, and it could go up for $1,000. For G1 and G2 drivers, there’s a minimum 30 day license suspension.
Haliburton Highlands OPP constable Dianna Dauphinee says there have been 54 collisions in Haliburton County to date where distracted driving was the cause.
Safety will also be increased for cyclists now that drivers are required to keep one-metre distance when passing cyclists. There are also higher fines coming for cyclists who don’t have proper lights and reflectors.
Today’s also changes also make it law for drivers to slow down and move over when tow trucks are on the side of the road.
