The federal government plays a role when it comes to local agriculture. That’s according to all the candidates for MP in Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Brock. NDP Mike Perry is releasing his platform about local agriculture saying he plans to get federal funds for local processing facilities, and make some financial changes to help with succession planning. He also says he plans to protect supply management and our agriculture sectors in the proposed Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
Green Party candidate Bill MacCallum is addressing this issue saying they oppose the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal and would make sure farm support payments are farm-based. He also explains agriculture can be protected through supporting local food markets, improving research and stopping the loss of agriculture land to development
Meanwhile, Liberal candidate David Marquis says helping farmers means making sure they can get their goods to market for a reasonable price, and have risk management solutions to help in the bad times. He also says risk management solutions, infrastructure upgrades and supply management support will all help our local farmers.
Jamie Schmale for the Conservatives says they’ve been helping farmers by offering interest-free loans and increasing trades so local food can get to tables worldwide. He explains the millions of dollars they’ve invested in the industry, and the lower cost to do business for Canadian farmers.
