Algonquin Highlands council to look into retaining portion of Hawk Lake log chute

Should the Hawk Lake Log Chute be removed or saved?

Algonquin Highlands council debated that question during a meeting on Aug. 14, after receiving a report from Chris Card, Parks, Recreation and Trails Manager, recommending its removal. According to Card, the structure is beyond its serviceable lifespan and falling apart.

“It is in a state of complete disrepair at this point,” said Card. “Parts of it are falling off and floating downstream, and that has been happening more frequently. In fact, sometimes as we have been there right before our eyes pieces are falling off of the log chute.”

Card says there are concerns large parts of the structure could break off and block the water downtown stream. He says the thought is that the log chute could be rebuilt when Parks Canada rebuilds the nearby damn, however it is not in their five year plan, and could be 10 to 15 years away.

Mayor Liz Danielsen said it was “extremely heartbreaking” to be talking about the removal of something that means so much to the community.

After a lengthy discussion, council approved a motion directing staff to consult with a structural engineer to see if any portion of the log chute can be retained. Staff will report back to council at a meeting later this year.
