Minden Hills reducing annual garbage bag allotment

The Township of Minden Hills is reducing in the annual garbage bag allotment for all household.

At a meeting on Feb. 12, council approved a staff recommendation to reduce the annual allotment to 104 garbage bags per year – effective July 1.

“This proposed reduction is intended to encourage to waste diversion and recycling, ensure sustainable use of landfill capacity, and align with out current waste management practices,” said Chelsea Cosh, Manager of Waste Facilities. “The Township currently offers several waste diversion and recycling programs such as textile recycling, and now are new enhanced blue box program. Most recently council endorsed a new organics program. These programs will allow residents to diver these recycling and reusable materials from household garbage and keep the material out of landfill.”

Cosh says the propped allotment of 104 garbage bags is reasonable and aligns with best practices in other municipalities across the province.

She also told council that “very few people” were using their full current allotment of 156 garbage bags per year.

Updated waste disposal cards will be sent out to Minden residents later this year.
