The results of a community-wide affordability and governance study were presented to Haliburton County council earlier this month. Now, the County wants to hear from residents.
Four Town Hall meetings will be held across the region next week to discuss one question: What potential new governance model for the County of Haliburton do you prefer?
The detailed report stemming from the study includes a variety of new governance model options, including:
- Model 1 – Current two-tier model: The existing county and local municipal structure would remain, with responsibilities divided between the county and the four local municipalities
- Model 2 – Single-tier model: One municipal government would be responsible for most local municipal services, governance, taxation, administration, planning, and service delivery across the entire study area
- Model 3 – Enhanced County – Four Local Municipalities with additional services uploaded: The two-tier structure would remain, but selected services would move from the local municipalities to the county to improve consistency, capacity, and coordination.
- Model 4 Enhanced County – 2 Local Municipalities: The four local municipalities would be combined into two local municipalities, while the county would manage many specialized services transferred to the County.
Meetings to discuss the report will be held Aug. 25 at the Haliburton Legion, Aug. 26 at the Minden Community Centre, Aug. 27 at the Lloyd Watson Centre in Wilberforce and Aug. 31 at the Stanhope Firefighters Community Hall.
