OPP shares winter safety tips as extreme weather slams Haliburton Highlands

With continued snowfall and colder temperatures ahead in the Haliburton Highlands, the OPP has shared safety tips to help people stay safe.

The OPP warns of dangerous travel conditions in several areas due to heavy snow and high winds. Police said residents can expect whiteouts, icy roads, and significant delays.

Drivers are urged to respect road closures and avoid non-essential travel.

Police advise drivers to reduce their speed, use headlights at all times, and maintain a safe following distance. Additionally, ensure the vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit before heading out.

When shoveling snow, the Township of Algonquin Highlands officials remind residents that pushing snow onto or across municipal roadways can be dangerous and prohibited.

Officials in Haliburton County urge residents to dress for the weather, prepare for the unexpected, and ensure their vehicles are stocked with an emergency kit containing blankets, warm clothes, a flashlight, snacks, and a fully charged phone.
